DAVID Cotterill, who won 24 caps for the Welsh football team, has chosen to auction his very last pair of signed football boots and donate all proceeds to the Welsh mental health charity, Gofal.

Having experienced depression and anxiety during the peak of his football career, Cotterill is now dedicating his time to raising awareness of mental health issues and encouraging people to seek support when they need it.

Playing any sport at a professional level brings its own pressures, but it can also make it particularly difficult for players to speak about how they are feeling due to the risk of not making it onto the team.  Gofal is currently developing a programme that will support sports people of all levels with their mental health and wellbeing.

“There’s a real fear that if your manager knows you’re not feeling well mentally, he might think you’re not up to a match so you end up keeping your thoughts to yourself, which ultimately makes you feel worse.  I want to help people to be able to speak about how they are feeling; we speak so openly about our physical health, why can’t we talk and get help with our mental health?”

Cardiff-born Cotterill has chosen to donate to Gofal after learning about the charity’s work which supports three thousand people to effectively manage their mental health and live happier, fulfilled lives each year.

“I’ve chosen to donate my boots to the mental health charity, Gofal.  The work that they do to support people’s recovery and the projects that make all the difference to people’s lives are so inspiring.”

This is not a traditional auction!  All bids will be counted as donations and the winner will be selected at random, meaning anyone can win – not just the highest bidder.

Text KICK30 to 70070 to bid or click here. Funds collected from the auction will help to reach more people throughout Wales to get the help and support that they need.

Ewan Hilton, Chief Executive of Gofal said:

“I’m thrilled that David Cotterill has chosen to auction his last pair of boots for Gofal.  It’s so important that people from all walks of life feel able to tell their stories and for a high profile footballer with a fan base throughout the UK to do so opens the platform for more people.  Many of us experience depression and feelings of anxiety, and we all face challenges in life - the more we talk, the easier it will be for people to seek help and to feel better.  I’m excited to see where this new partnership will take Gofal’s work.”

This is not a traditional auction! All bids will be counted as donations and the winner will be selected at random, meaning anyone can win – not just the highest bidder.  You can bid to win David Cotterill’s boots through Just Giving here or text KICK30 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070.

The auction will open at 12.00pm on 23/11/18 and close at 12.00pm on 30/11/18.
