Former tenant celebrated in Personal Achievement Award
Chris, who has been supported through Gofal’s Caerphilly supported housing accommodation and projects has just been awarded the highly-esteemed Personal Achievement Award by Cymorth Cymru.
In 2016, Chris lost his mother after a short illness and experienced a breakdown in his mental health, describing feeling alone and isolated in his grief. Chris began to experience depression and anxiety causing him to lose his job and for his relationship to break down.
After 5 months of sofa surfing, Chris moved into a supported flat through Gofal. Chris’s self-esteem was extremely low when he first made contact with Gofal, activities such as phone calls and appointments caused his anxiety to spike, leading to emotional distress and frustration.
Chris’ drive for change and willingness to push himself out of his comfort zone during the past two years have helped him to overcome the barriers facing him to live the life that he wanted. Chris engaged in all support on offer by Gofal and he was soon able to develop his confidence and self-esteem to gradually make changes.
One of Chris’ main coping strategies is sport so our staff supported Chris to join his local gym. After building up his confidence, Chris independently joined the local boxing club and is now assisting the coach to train and support young people at the club, often leading fitness sessions.
Chris’ attention to detail with cleaning his flat was noticed by staff and he is now employed by Gofal’s social enterprise APP UK as a cleaner – another step that has built on his confidence.
Chris’ drive to make changes whilst being supported by Gofal has helped to transform his life. Chris’ journey over the past two years can inspire anyone experiencing difficulties in their mental health to seek help and realise that positive change is possible with the right support and approach. The staff at Gofal are delighted that Chris’ efforts and achievements have been recognised through Cymorth’s Personal Achievement Award.
